Going into the leadership workshop I that Kirk Weisler's was going to be another one of those boring and repetitive speakers, who rambles on and on for five hours. I was already planning on falling asleep and missing half of the presentation. I get bored really easily and can not stay focused. There was something different about Kirk, he loved his job and was happy to be there. Just by the tone of his voice and passion in his motions you could tell he was having fun. I was more focused on some parts of his work shop more than others, but that is normal. The thing that really stuck out to me is when he talked about the Love'em or Lose'em book. Kirk was very passionate about this book and kept everyone focused. These questions really stood out to me:
What will keep you here?
What might entice you away?
What is most energizing about your work?
Are we fully utilizing your talents?
What is inhibiting your success?
What can I do differently to best assist you?
With out passion and love for your job, you will wake up every morning dreading work. With out questioning yourself and pushing yourself you will not continue to succeed. Kirk taugh us to find our mooo, which is one of the most important things that I took out of this work shop. You have to find what you are good at and what you love to do, in order to succeed and grow.
After taking the test on Wednesday and writing about the cartoon about the one sheep that is taking a risk and trying to stand out above the flock, I found this cartoon to follow up. The sheep that stood out in the first cartoon took on the risk of being attacked by the wolf that we all know about. But this cartoon shows that the sheep was very successful and had many followers. All these sheep look very happy and to realize that all that it took was for one sheep to stick his neck out and take charge. If you have a good idea put it to use and you will have followers to help you get to where you want to be.
When trying to teach leadership it is amazing how simple certain demonstrations can be but how influential they really are. When wearing the chinese finger links the other day in class I feel that they got the point accross. When it started out just two people running up the stairs it really was not a problem at all and the made great time. As more and more students hooked their fingers together it become more and more difficult to get everyone on the same page and moving quickly. Once Dr. Feinburg joined in the other workers in the company did not realize that he was going to hold them up and they ended up breaking the chain. With the lack of communication between workers it is very difficult to get thinks running smoothly. This was a great presentation and showed some great aspects of team work and how it is not always easy to work as a team if there is no leader or anyone that takes charge.
What things do you need to do and accomplish if you had one minute to describe why you would be a good leader? Would you be able to talk the whole time or would you run out of things to desribe yourself. Being a leader takes on the spot responces, you must be able to persuade your new or current customers that you can take them to the top of the mountain. With no trust you will have no followers, with no followers you can not become a leader. So what things should you cover in the little time you have to impress the crowd/new recruits. The number one thing the leaders in class forgot were their names. How can you elect a leader who is nameless. The second big topic is confidence. Confidence can be expressed in many ways, like a few people in class even though they were out of things to talk about they kept the students intertained and most likely recieved the majority of votes. You must have accomplishments and be able to talk about them. Do not bore your audience but give them the truth and facts that might apply to them. When ending the conversation make sure to thank your audience and set up that next meeting.
The biggest obstacle in life is “yourself.” What does this statement mean? It is usually thoughts about yourself that can hold you back and create obstacles for you in life. Until you realize this statement you will always be blaming others for things that only you have control over and will never be able to find a way around the obstacles holding you back. You never know when life is going to throw obstacles in your path. When it does you will have to be ready to go above and beyond your boundaries to find the best possible option. If you strive to overcome obstacles you will reach new heights and experience new and great things. Though it may feel uncomfortable you will become use to it and it will make you feel good about yourself and help you realize if you work hard and come to a conclusion you can overcome anything. “You are aware the obstacles in life are not real right? Why is it so easy to explain what a leader is and what a leader does, but when it comes down to thinking about what you can do to stand out is it so difficult? Are leaders born or are they made? This is a very difficult question and everybody has their own thoughts and opinions. Some of the characteristics that I believe every leader must have to become successful are; integrity, creativity, vision, judgement, communication, knowledge, honesty, and passion. I feel that without every one of these characteristic a leader will not be successful. There is a difference between a leader and a great leader. Leadership is brought about through your experiences in life. Everyone deals with certain experiences differently, that is why everybody has their own unique type of leadership within. Leadership starts from within and is all about learning and changing the life of others, hopefully for the best. What everybody wants out of a leader will vary directly, so all that you can do is go with your heart and stick with the choices you make and be confident with the decision that you make.
